An article in the Washington Post cited an article from SmartMoney magazine, which measured the value of colleges by their graduates salaries in proportion to the tuition they paid as students. However, this is only a value metric, and SmartMoney magazine admitted that its scale is far from perfect. Its analysis does not take financial aid into consideration. Some colleges post high tuition prices but offer huge scholarships to nearly every student. Its a marketing ploy. Many Ivy League schools fall into that category, as they give out enough financial aid/scholarships to most of their students, which end up reducing the net price by half or more. But, the report still offers some general but valuable information. The report measures a colleges graduates salaries at two points: one when they just graduate and another at mid-career. It then forms an estimated, averaged salary. Dartmouth graduates have the highest salaries of all other grads with mid-career earnings at $123,000. Dartmouth, an Ivy League school, has a rich history of producing high-earning graduates. It ranks 21st on SmartMoneys list of most valuable colleges, which is about the highest ranking for any private university. Carnegie-Mellon graduates earn the most right after graduation with $62,400, but the university ranks 23rd on the list of overall value, which is still fairly high for a private college. Sarah Lawrence College has the highest tuition and living expenses in the nation at $148,570. But, that number does not reflect student aid, and Sarah Lawrence College gives out a tremendous amount of student aid. The colleges grads earn a lot of money, and the school ranks at 50 on the overall value list. The value metric does not consider specific schools within colleges. It only accounts for overall earning figures of all graduates. For example, Purdue, which ranks 7th on the list is a huge engineering school. Engineering is one of the highest-paying fields, and that likely tips the scale in Purdues favor. Again, this list is not completely accurate, and its authors even admit that. Why Students Are Being Rewarded For AP Tests Do well on an Advanced Placement exam, and receive $100. Thats exactly what South High Community School in New York does for its students, according to an article in the New York Times. Teachers whose students do well also receive bonuses. The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) funds the incentives at South High Community School and all the other schools that participate in this program. It pays each student who scores a 3 or above (high enough to earn college credit) on the math or science A.P. exam $100. Teachers incentives are not as straightforward and are based on the percentage of their students that pass the exam. More than half of the 1,853 teachers who participated in this initiative last year earned bonuses of at least $2,000. The largest reward was $12,500. The national program is still growing, and its goal is to increase the number of A.P. exams being taken. In just over three years, this initiative increased exams to 38,000 annually. Roughly 308 schools in six states are participating by rewarding their students and teachers with monetary benefits. However, there has been a lot of debate about whether this program actually improves students and teachers motivation. Rewarding people with exterior motives like cash can diminish intrinsic motivation. In this case, students only want to do well on the test so they can get that $100, not because it is truly important to them. Roland G. Fryer, a Harvard economist, who won a MacArthur Foundation award for his research on educational incentives, said that a cash incentive cannot consistently increase students performance. Under this initiative, students can be motivated to perform better on the A.P. exam; however, that motivation will not translate to the classroom or other tests. This takes the intrinsic motivation away from students. However, Fryer did say that combining payments with tutoring, teacher training and other tactics could be promising and provide more consistent motivation. The College Board, the administrator of the A.P. program, endorses the math and science initiative that rewards students and teachers performance with cash benefits. Some academics, however, are expressing concerns that the A.P. program is getting too large. They say too many unprepared students are taking and failing the A.P. classes/exams. They argue that this program is only making that problem worse. At most schools, students have to test into A.P. classes; however, the standards are becoming more lax. Some schools do not have entrance tests, and students only have to sign up. But, others claim that more students are now passing the exam and getting a head start on college, which could decrease dropout rates and improve students success in college. They argue that students should always be persuaded to take the hardest classes, even if that means failing. This will, at the very least, prepare students for college-level classes.

The L2000 ($699), arguably their flagship model, is one of the most versatile instruments available, as its two Humbucker pickups are augmented by a three-way pickup selector, a series/parallel switch, and a switchable three-mode preamp which controls volume, bass, and treble. Recommendation: GL Tribute L2000 or L2500 4) Spector Legend (Range: $499-$849) The Spector Legend Series offers slightly less in the way of variety, but that is made up for in the quality of construction. The Legend Series contains the Standard line, which comes in four- and five-string versions, as well as the Classic Line, which is available with four, five, or six strings. The Soundgear series is always a safe bet; they are pretty much all equipped with two Humbuckers and a 3-Band onboard EQ, which gives them a serious leg up in versatility, although not to the same extent as the GL Tribute L2000. Ibanez also offers the Artcore series, which consists of shortscale hollowbody basses with a very classic vibe. Artcore basses are some of the only Passive Ibanez basses and generally come with two more subtly voiced pickups, while their Active counterparts generally lend themselves to a more Hi-Fi tone that cuts through the mix. Introvert Whisperer / Is it really a Hostile Work Environment 5 Steps for Dealing with Difficult People - Introvert Whisperer Is it really a Hostile Work Environment? 5 Steps for Dealing with Difficult People Sometimes terminology is used in our culture that gets adopted and used, but it isn’t being used correctly. “Hostile Work Environment” is one of those terms that you hear, but may or may not be true to the legal definition of it. That’s right  when it comes to this term; we have laws about hostile work environments and with the law comes a legal definition. It’s good to know the difference, because depending on what you are really talking about, your potential actions could be very different. To quote About.com: “A hostile work environment is created by a boss or coworker whose actions, communication or behavior makes doing your job impossible. This means that the behavior altered the terms, conditions, and/or reasonable expectations of a comfortable work environment…and must be discriminatory in nature. (Discriminatory would be about age, religion, gender, or race). The behavior must last over time and must be severe.”  As you can see this is a very specific set of behaviors that protect our right to work. There can be legal ramifications because someone has made working and prospering at work impossible, if this issue is not handled properly by the employer. Since we are clear about the true, legal term “Hostile Work Environment”, let’s look at what is taking place when your work situation may or may not be aligned to this technical term, but it’s bad nonetheless. What can you do in either situation? Know the proper way to escalate an issue. You don’t want to go from your office to the local Bureau of Labor and Industry to talk to a lawyer. No matter which situation you are in, you are expected to work from the bottom up. Your steps should be: 1. Address the issue directly with the offender. Difficult for many people, but necessary, is to adequately communicate what the issue is and to give a very specific example. You don’t want to use absolutes like “you always talk vulgar to me” when that isn’t actually true, because that person may be vulgar frequently, but not ‘always’. Consider: “When you spoke to me just now, that was vulgar and inappropriate. You do not have my permission to continue. 2. If the issue continues.  Again, difficult for some people, but you need to repeat your previous message and then let them know you will be escalating it to both management and HR. By this point, you should be documenting both your conversations and comments made to you by the offender. You may need this type of detailed information when you take the issue up the food chain. 3. Take it to management and Human Resources (HR).  Not all companies have an HR, but if they do, you need to cover your bases and ensure they are in the loop. When you take your issue to your manager, you will be much more effective if you can keep calm and professional. An emotional scene won’t help make your case despite how you might feel about it. You need to be prepared to give specific examples. You also need to be prepared for management to speak to the offender, making the previous step important. You must hold your management accountable for correcting the situation. This doesn’t mean you insisting on this person being fired, but it is reasonable to expect that they will take whatever action they think will curb the inappropriate behavior. You should expect, and ask for a follow up, to minimally hear back that they did take action. You don’t need a full account of what was said and done, as that is confidential. 4. If it continues.  Again, you need to follow the previous steps and waste no time informing your management and HR. You are still looking for these people to take action. 5. And if it still continues.  At this point, you may be out of options. If the issue does follow the definition of a hostile work environment, you may have grounds for a legal action. If it is simply someone who does annoying things, badgers your work or makes rude remarks, your only two options are: -Take the issue to a higher management level. -Leave. While it might seem unfair that you would have to be the one to leave, all too many people tend to be weenies   when  dealing with difficult personnel issues. You can either find a way to tolerate it, be miserable or leave. Hopefully, you will never have to face this type of situation but if you do, learn the right way, the professional way of addressing this kind of issue. It will be more effective in the long run for everyone involved. According to this article, by Michael Bodson, President and CEO of DTCC, Black and Hispanic students combined account for only 7% of math and computer science graduate students, yet substantial math and technology skills are required for two-thirds of jobs in banking and finance. More broadly than financial services, studies show that people of color make up 10% of all STEM jobs despite making up over a quarter of the U.S. population. Tracing this disparity back to high school, The College Board found that only 3 in 10 African Americans take AP Math, and half of those who do not take it report lacking the confidence to do so. IMPACT OF HEART Of Heart’s approximately 400 students in the 2015/16 school year, 55% are female and almost all are Black (58%) or Hispanic (38%). Our hope would be that their time with tutors gives them not only the skills needed for success in higher levels of math, but also the confidence and encouragement to pursue challenging work that involves math, whether tied directly to the STEM field or not. Indeed 97% of students have met program growth goals in math to date, and more than 90% of teachers report that students show increased confidence and/or enthusiasm towards math as a result of the program. IMPORTANCE OF FOUNDATIONAL MATH Research shows that the average salary for STEM careers is $53,000; half of those jobs do not require a four-year degree. Several of Heart’s funding partners attest to job opportunities at their companies here in Charlotte immediately following high school and/or trade school if a person can demonstrate proficiency in algebra and trigonometry, evaluated by industry-specific exams such as the Construction and Skilled Trades (CAST) Test. At Heart, we know that students must be numerically powerful far before entering their first algebra class and that arithmetic can be taught in a way that supports algebraic thinking later on. Difficulties with math start as early as elementary school and younger, and they are often related to a lack of true understanding of how our number system works: quantity, groups, base ten and place value. Instead, many students rely on memorized rules and procedures. This is disempowering, with life-long consequences not only for opportunities directly tied to math skills, but also for a person’s ability to think and reason logically to figure out the world around them.
